Sustainable building for developing electric vehicle charging systems
ABB and EGM share a focus on creating healthy environments. The new building in Delft emphasizes ABB’s commitment to advancing developments in the field of sustainable mobility. Both the building itself as the research activities that will take place within the centre will help to build a better future.
Healthy sustainable building
The new global headquarter and R&D Centre has environmental simulation rooms for the purpose of testing how the charging systems behave in warm or cold weather. Extreme conditions like temperatures of -40 to +40 °C and high humidity can be simulated within these rooms. All other tests can be conducted with computer simulation models, which ABB has built of practically every electric car and make.
The building will be entirely sustainable: connected to the TU Delft combined heat and power plant, the roof covered with solar panels and well insulated. The construction of the complex will be robust, necessary for testing heavy vehicles like a public transport bus or truck.
From Epyon to ABB
Epyon, start-up founded by former students of Delft University of Technology, developed the original charging station. The company was acquired by ABB in 2011. These days the rapid chargers are sold in more than 60 countries. Dutch owners of electric and hybrid cars encounter this technology at the Fastned rapid charging stations along the motorway, for instance.
A better world
ABB recently gained global recognition by Fortune Magazine, which ranked ABB as #8 in its list of companies who are changing the world in e-mobility. It goes without saying that EGM is proud to be selected by the front runner to design their new headquarters and R&D centre.
Opening of the new facility is planned for the summer of 2019.
