Description
What would be a better place to project a starry sky than on a perfect half sphere? For the planetarium of ARTIS the choice for a dome was evident. A geodesic dome made of tim- ber was designed for reason of efficiency of material use and the speed of construction. The dome, with a diameter of 25 meters, has a covering of copper cladding. By the use of curved timber the surface of the dome exactly describes the form of a sphere.

Lüning Consulting Engineers, as engineer for the timberstructures, optimized the overall design of the dome and was responsible for the detailled design of the timber structure and the connectors.
