Renovatie en uitbreiding van het oudste stadion van Nederland

Het Spartastadion, het oudste voetbalstadion van Nederland, voldeed niet langer aan hedendaagse eisen. Architectenbureau ZJA ontwierp de plannen voor renovatie en uitbreiding.

Na uitgebreid onderzoek werd besloten het stadion op de bestaande locatie te herbouwen, onder andere vanwege de kansen op sociaal en economisch gebied voor de herontwikkeling van de buurt Spangen.

De beschikbare ruimte in de buurt was beperkt en daarom is gekozen voor een model waarin deze maximaal wordt benut. Onder de tribunes zijn bedrijfsruimten, bovenop het hoofdgebouw twee extra lagen met kantoren en in Het Kasteel, de bestaande en te renoveren hoofdtribune, is een buurtgerichte voorziening ontworpen. Door de mix van gebruiksfuncties is het gebouw niet alleen op wedstrijddagen, maar ook op andere dagen intensief in gebruik, een belangrijke kwaliteit voor een stadion in een woonbuurt.

Het stadion is een kwartslag gedraaid ten opzichte van de oude ligging. Dit geeft 'Het Kasteel' de oude positie in het midden van het veld terug. Het nieuwe hoofdgebouw is aan de overzijde in de richting van de Horvathweg gepositioneerd. Dit biedt de mogelijkheid de verkeersstromen van en naar het stadion buiten de stad om te leiden.

Op de eerste verdieping van het gebouw zijn uitgebreide business-voorzieningen: een restaurant, een grote bar en vergaderfaciliteiten. Het stadion telt ongeveer 10.000 gewone plaatsen, 500 business-seats, 35 business-units met ieder 11 plaatsen en 40 persplaatsen.

Het veld is veertig centimeter opgetild en vormt samen met de reclameborden langs het veld de barrière tussen het publiek en de spelers. Een hek tussen veld en tribunes wordt zo vermeden, terwijl direct bij binnenkomst van het stadion zicht op het veld mogelijk is.

Het tribunegebouw is opgebouwd uit betonnen prefab-elementen, de tribune-overkapping is van staal. De buitenkant van het stadion is van een niet-poreuze donkere baksteen, die minder gevoelig is voor graffiti. Hogerop, onbereikbaar voor vandalen, is de gevel van cederhout.

De bouw is eind april 1998 gestart en is eind 1999 afgerond.

Soccer stadium for Sparta, Rotterdam

The Sparta Stadium, the oldest football stadium in Holland, no longer met contemporary expectations. After extensive research it was decided to rebuild the stadium on the same location. One of the reasons for this decision was the positive social and economic influence the stadium would have on the redevelopment of the neighbourhood Spangen.

The available space was limited. It therefore had to be maximally exploited: under the stands we made business accommodations, on top of the main building there are two extra floors with offices, and in the Castle (the old main stand that is to be renovated) a facility for the neighbourhood has been designed. Thus, the stadium is not only used for sporting events; it also hosts various activities which makes it an integrated part of the residential area.

We moved the stadium a quarter of a turn, returning 'Het Kasteel" (the Castle) to its original position in the middle of the field. The new main building is located on the other side, in the direction of the Horvath road. This makes it possible to lead the stadium traffic around the town. On the first floor of the building there are extensive business facilities: a conference room, a restaurant and a large bar.

The stadium has about 10.000 regular seats, 500 business seats and 18 business units with 11 places each and 40 press seats. The field has been lifted forty metres, and together with the billboards it forms a barrier between the audience and the players. Thus, there is no need for a fence between the field and the bleachers, making it possible to have a good view of the field upon entering the stadium. The stand is made of concrete prefab elements. The roof of the stand is made of steel. For the exterior we chose a non-porous dark brick, which is less sensitive to graffiti. The cedar facade is high and cannot be reached by vandals.
