Uitbreiding Topsportcentrum, Rotterdam

Het gebied rondom de Kuip, in Rotterdam Zuid, is al decennia lang de omgeving waar sportvoorzieningen worden ontwikkeld. In de eerste jaren van de twintigste eeuw ontwierp architectenbureau ZJA de topsporthal, meteen naast het Feijenoord stadion. Gebouwd met een heel bescheiden budget, is het een lichte en uitnodigende omgeving waar scholen hun gym-lessen kunnen doen, en breedtesport, zoals zaalvoetbal kan worden gespeeld. Maar het is ook een volwaardige topsport-locatie, waar basket- en volleybalclubs die actief zijn op het hoogste niveau kunnen trainen en hun wedstrijden spelen. Het is een compact ontworpen gebouw dat toch tot 2500 toeschouwers onderbrengt.

Al na een paar jaar bleek dat de vraag naar meer sportvoorzieningen voor de stad nog niet voldaan was. Omdat de grond in dit begeerde gebied schaars is, was het logisch dat het ontwerp voor de uitbreiding van het topsport-centrum de hoogte in zou gaan. Een parkeergarage en zeven verdiepingen. De oude, gewelfde hal, met zijn opengewerkte stijl en houten accenten is door een transparante hal waar de liften zich bevinden, verbonden met zijn stoere grote broer: een hoog zwart volume met een façade van verspringende aluminium lamellen.

Vernuft en degelijkheid

Op de hoogste verdiepingen van het gebouw zijn de lokalen en kantoren te vinden van de MBO opleiding Sport en Bewegen van het Albeda College, die overdag de voornaamste gebruikers zijn van de daaronder gelegen breedtesport-zaal. Die kan door schuifwanden in drie-en worden gedeeld. Daar weer onder bevindt zich de zaalsport-arena voor de lokale topclubs die basketbal en volleybal spelen. Op de tribunes gaan 1000 toeschouwers. Eromheen en op de lager gelegen verdiepingen zijn een dojo/dans-zaal, ruimtes voor fitness, massage en fysiotherapie, kantoren voor topsport-bestuurders en een kantine. Om dit allemaal in hetzelfde volume te passen moest ruimte worden gespaard. Dat gebeurde door de voor de brandveiligheid noodzakelijke torens met vluchttrappen in de vier hoeken van het gebouw, een constructieve functie te geven. De kantoren en de grote zaal hangen aan de spanten daartussen. Dat maakt het gebouw zo sterk, dat er in de grote zaal geen kolommen nodig waren en er een open ruimte ontstond die iedereen optimaal zicht biedt.

Stijl en uiterlijk

Helder, ruimtelijk en stoer, dat zijn de aanduidingen voor de visuele indruk die de uitbreiding van het topsport-centrum maakt. De lamellen aan de gevel staan gekanteld om regen en zon onder de juiste hoek te weerkaatsen en op de plaatsen waar lokalen en kantoren zijn, licht toe te laten. Er is ook een LED scherm dat passerend verkeer boodschappen kan overbrengen over aanstaande wedstrijden en activiteiten. Het gebouw heeft een sterke aanwezigheid in de omgeving.

Binnen zijn de kleuren krachtig en helder, in geel en oranje, de omlijstingen zijn strak en zwart. De belichting is breed en egaal, om overzicht en contact te vergemakkelijken. Veel aandacht is besteed aan de beheersing van de akoestiek. Zowel een menigte als een lege ruimte kunnen door slechte geluidsomstandigheden de aanwezigheid in een sportgebouw onprettig maken. Goed gedempt en verdeeld geluid verbetert een gebouw aanzienlijk.

Een gespierd en slim gebouw, met een stoere buitenkant en een helder, licht en uitnodigend interieur, waar de verschillende gebruikers zonder elkaar te hinderen hun weg en plek vinden.

Going Up!

For decades the area around De Kuip, the home of Feijenoord football club, on the south side of Rotterdam, is where local sports facilities are being developed. In the early years of the 21st century architectural studio ZJA designed a building for elite sports, right next to the Feijenoord stadium. Based on a very limited budget it delivered a light and inviting venue for schools to hold their physical education classes and to accommodate recreational sports, such as indoor football. But it also provides a state-of-the-art location for elite sports, where basketball and volleyball clubs playing at the highest level can train and play their matches. Though compact, this design still seats 2500 spectators.

After only a few years it became obvious that the city needed more sports facilities. With a land scarcity in this sought-after part of town, the logical decision for the design to extend the centre was to extend upwards. Now, an underground parking garage and a building of seven floors exists. The existing, slightly bulging hall with its open style and wooden accents is connected by a transparent section where the elevators are located to what one could call its big sturdy brother: a towering high black volume with a facade of angled aluminium slats.

Ingenuity and reliability

The top floors of the building house the classrooms and offices of the Albeda College educational program for Sport and Movement. Teachers and students at this college are the main users of the sports hall one level down. By operating two sliding walls, the hall can be divided into three equal spaces. One level below that, the local top-class basketball and volleyball clubs have their arena. The stands can seat 1.000 spectators. In the spaces around the arena and on the lower floors one can find a dojo, classrooms for dancing lessons, rooms for fitness, physiotherapy and massage. Offices for managers and administrators and a cafeteria complete the lay out. In order to house all these functions in the available volume, space had to be saved. This was achieved by giving the fire escapes in the four corners of the building a function in the constructive design. The offices and the large halls are supported by huge beams connecting those four corner towers. This gives the building such strength that no columns were necessary inside the big hall with the sports arena, allowing for a large open space offering every spectator optimal view of the game.

Style and looks

Clear, spacious and sturdy. Those are the words that characterize the visual impression this sport facility gives. The horizontal slats covering the facade are tilted in order to reflect rain and sunlight under the right angle, but are placed differently in front of classrooms and offices to allow daylight to enter. A large LED screen functions as a billboard to communicate news and dates for matches and other events. This adds to the strong presence of the building in the surrounding area.

The interior has a powerful and clear colour palette, in yellow and orange, framed by straight black lines. The lighting is ambient and even, to increase overview and connectivity. Much attention was paid to the control of the acoustic quality in the building. Due to poor acoustics, both large crowds as well as an empty building can create an unpleasant stay in a sport facility. Controlled and evened-out sound increases the quality of a space significantly.

A smart and strong building, with a sturdy facade and a bright, clear and welcoming interior, where different streams of users can find their way without being in each other’s way.
