A4 Delft-Schiedam

De A4 Delft – Schiedam (A4DS) op een steenworp van Delft en Rotterdam, snijdt dwars door het natuur- en poldergebied van Midden-Delfland met knotwilgen, grutto's, schapen en slootjes. Om de zichtbaarheid van de weg te verlagen en de geluidsproductie te reduceren is besloten de weg deels half, deels geheel verdiept en deels in een tunnel uit te voeren. De A4DS kruist in een verdiepte ligging tot 6 meter onder maaiveld dwars door de polder van Midden-Delfland, alles dat boven de weg uitsteekt of buiten het wegprofiel uitkomt, zal sterk zichtbaar worden in het landschap. “Niet horen, niet zien, niet ruiken” is het motto van het tracébesluit voor de A4DS.

Een snelweg in het landschap is een moeilijk te verbergen element, niet alleen omdat er auto’s rijden die geluid en uitlaatgassen produceren of omdat een autosnelweg een enorm element is, maar vooral ook omdat een snelweg een enorm programma van eisen herbergt dat invloed heeft tot buiten de weg zelf.

Het plan kent een sterke landschappelijke opdeling van noord naar zuid: het eerste deel loopt op maaiveld door een recreatiegebied aan de rafelranden van de gemeente Delft. Het tweede deel kruist verdiept door een cultuurhistorisch polderlandschap, met een vogelbroedgebied, kruisende ecologische structuren, een uitgebreide recreatief programma, een complexe waterhuishouding en kruisende kleinschalige infrastructuur. Het derde deel loopt door stedelijk gebied in een landtunnel, over de grens tussen de gemeente Schiedam en Vlaardingen. Bovenop het tunneldak is een sportpark met bomen aangelegd met fietspaden.

The Honey Highway

De 7 kilometer lange A4DS tussen Delft en Schiedam is een paradijs voor bijen en is de eerste Honey Highway ter wereld. Om bijensterfte tegen te gaan is biologisch bloemenzaad uitgestrooid in een deel van de berm langs de A4. Deze Honey Highway zorgt er voor dat bijen weer de kans krijgen om op onbespoten schrale grond te zitten die met name te vinden is langs de rijkswegen. De 7 kilometer A4DS is het begin en zal navolging krijgen door heel Nederland. De Honey Highway is een samenwerkingsproject van initiatiefneemster Deborah Post met Rijkswaterstaat, Provincie, Gemeente Midden-Delfland, Consortium A4all, bedrijven, sponsoren en burgers.

The A4 Delft - Schiedam (A4DS) motorway, close to the city of Delft and Rotterdam, transects an area of outstanding natural beauty and a typical Dutch polder landscape with willows, godwits, sheep and ditches. In order to reduce the visual impact of the motorway, and also reduce noise pollution, the motorway is concealed by recessing the motorway in the landscape. This is either half or fully - up to 6 meters below ground level - or by having the motorway run partially through a tunnel. “Hear nothing, see nothing, smell nothing” is the motto for the routing for the A4DS.

A motorway through the countryside is obviously difficult to conceal. Not just because of vehicles producing noise and emissions or because the motorway is a vast element, but also because a motorway involves a vast schedule of requirements influencing an area well beyond the motorway itself.

The plan is characterized by a strong geographical division between north and south: the first part of the motorway proceeds on ground level through a recreational area at the perimeter of the Municipality of Delft. The second and recessed part transects a cultural-historic polder landscape with a bird nesting area, intersecting ecological structures, an extensive recreational programme, a complex water management system, and intersecting small-scale infrastructure. The third part proceeds through an urban area via a tunnel. Above the tunnel, a sports park with trees and cycle paths is built. 

The Honey Highway

The 7 kilometre A4DS between Delft and Schiedam is a paradise for bees and the first Honey Highway in the world. Organic flower seeds were planted along the A4 to benefit the bee population and counteract possible extinction. This Honey Highway gives bees a new chance to settle on chemically untreated land, typically found adjacent to motorways.

The Honey Higway is a collaborative project of initiator Deborah Post, together with Rijkswaterstaat, the Province, the municipality of Midden-Delfland, A4ALL Consortium, businesses, sponsors and citizens, and is likely to see repetition throughout the Netherlands.
