De oude Leidse Instrumentmakers School (LIS) heeft sinds kort een fraaie nieuwe vleugel. De door Kentie en partners ontworpen uitbreiding met een strak zakelijk karakter bevat op de begane grond een nieuwe werkplaats en kantine. Op de eerste en tweede verdieping zijn leslokalen en een docentenruimte. Tussen het bestaande schoolgebouw en het hoofdgebouw bevindt zich de nieuwe hoofdentree en trappenhuis, alles gerealiseerd in een transparant volume.
De mbo-vakschool in precisietechniek kent een hele rijke historie en werd in 1901 opgericht door Nobelprijswinnaar Kamerlingh Onnes. Toen hij in 1913 de Nobelprijs kreeg, verklaarde hij dat het hem dat nooit gelukt zou zijn zonder de instrumentmakers van de Leidse school. De leerlingen bedenken, ontwerpen en maken instrumenten in opdracht van de wetenschap (denk daarbij aan de deeltjesversneller van CERN bij Genève) maar ook van het bedrijfsleven, zoals ASML en Philips. De school staat internationaal hoog in aanzien.
