Amazonica Diergaarde Blijdorp

The Amazonica Dome of Blijdorp Zoo in Rotterdam forms the residence for several plants and animals from the Amazone Tropical Forest. The roof structure consists of a timber geodesic dome with a free span of 56m. The roof is coverded with triangular transparent air cushions. These cushions combine the wish to maximize daylight and at the same time prevent warming by the sun as much as possible.

The grid shell dome is made of glulam beams which are joined in specially designed connectors. The innovative Lüning-connector, not only allows the forces to transfer from one beam to another, it also enable the dome to be constructed without the need for scaffolding. As a result the geodesic timber dome becomes very economical and fast to build.
